Orlando Hand Bears American Portrait Sag Harbor NY Hamptons c1835 Folk Art RARE
Portrait attributed to Orlando Hand Bears depicting Andrew J. Case, the son of Col. Benjamin Case, who was in command of the American forces at Sag Harbor during the War of 1812 and later Postmaster. Andrew was born in 1817, so it would put him at 20 years old in 1837, which matches up with most of Bears works. Descended directly in the Case family. Lot includes a double half plate daguerreotype depicting Case and his wife at a later date.
Attribution has been confirmed by a Long Island curator who is considered an authority on Bears work.
The Daguerreotype shows Case wearing a similar watch key, but I have also found this same watch key in other Bears' portraits, such as the one of Mrs. Turner Mason (http://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?q=record_ID:siris_ari_166453) or the portrait of Philander Fordham (https://www.1000museums.com/artists/orlando-hand-bears)
Condition: Some losses along the lower edge of the canvas. Never restored or relined. Years of grime, would benefit a great deal from a professional cleaning.
Orlando Hand Bears was a native of Sag Harbor, New York and the pupil of another Sag Harbor resident, Hubbard Fordham (1794-1872). His clients were primarily the prosperous merchants and ship captains associated with the whaling industry of eastern Long Island. (Source: Minneapolis Institute of Art)

Provenance: Descended through the family of Andrew J. Case (August 12 1817-Nov. 14th 1892) along the female line from Frances Lucretia Case (1844 Riverhead NY-1939 Stamford, CT.) (Mrs. Benjamin F. Hoyt) to her daughter Bertha Hoyt (1877 Brooklyn NY - 1945 Stamford CT) (Mrs. Edward Gillespie Cunningham).
Measurements are:
Sight line: 30" H x 25" W
Frame: 35" H x 30 1/2" W
I prefer to deliver the portrait in the event that the buyer is located in New York or Long Island. Packing and Shipping will need to be handled through the local UPS store, if buyer is out of deliverable range.
