Arthur Turnbull Hill (AMERICAN 1868-1929)

Garden, 1918

Oil on Canvas, in period giltwood frame

Signed twice, l.l. "A.T. Hill, 1918" & l.r. "Arthur Turnbull Hill" with monograph.
Partial label from the Wm. H. Powell Fine Art Gallery, New York.

Provenance:  Private collection, Morristown, NJ.  Purchased by client's decorator associated with Butler's of Far Hills in the 1980s, presumably from a gallery or auction house.

I was unable to locate a title, but it can be assumed this is a garden in East Hampton, NY, where Hill was living and painting landscapes at the time.  A Large and colorful example of his work.

Inscribed faintly in graphite on stretcher: "Varnished in amber varnish, June 1924,  A. T. Hill"

Condition:  Overall good.  Has not been relined.  Some minor flaking in sky just above trees in right quadrant.  When examined under black light, the old varnish is visible.  Possible 3" linear touchup in the flowering shrubs on left side.  Otherwise no issues.  Frame in excellent condition.

Measurements:
21 3/4" H x 30" W Sight line
29" H x 37" W Frame
