A Federal Inlaid Mahogany Butler’s Desk / Chest, Signed & Dated 1835

Highly figured mahogany veneers throughout with pine secondary, dovetailed drawers, top drawer with false double front opening to a fitted interior.  Prospect door with kite escutcheon opening to two hidden drawers.

Coming directly from a very early NJ estate in Morristown, NJ.  I do not know any other provenance than that.  It may have descended in the family, or purchased from a shop years ago.  There appears to be a signature on the side of one drawer written in graphite.  I can not make out what it says, but appears to be dated   “Mar. 2 1835”.

Condition:  Refinished. Original feet, brasses and most original blocking.  Prospect door with repaired hinges, no key.  Some replaced drawer glides.  One brass drawer pull missing behind prospect door.  One pigeon hole valance missing.  One brass catch latch missing from fall front.  Latches to not work properly, so fall front must be taken out with care.  Wear to the leather writing surface, especially at hinge joint.  No key.  Other minor repairs over the years.

Measurements:  41″H x 42-1/4″W x 22″D
