Rare Antique Tall Garden Fountain Birdbath, Planter Baptismal Font Italian Style
Rare tall fountain coming directly from a wealthy Short Hills, NJ mansion where it sat in the garden for many years. This piece is shaped similar to an early Italian Baptismal font, however I think it is probably early 20th century. There is a center pipe that runs up through the center , which indicates it could have been made as a fountain.
Two pieces, the top bowl rests on the base, but there is a hole, so this would have to be caulked in order for it to hold water. Made of a heavy stone concrete material. Great patina from age and weathering. Notice the bold graduated bellflower patterns along the center column.
Condition: Normal light wear from years of exposure to the elements. Two small pieces of acanthus tips missing on the underside just below the bowl. There is a visual crack in the base (pictured), however there is no looseness to the base, nor danger of breaking more. There is strong reinforcement within the base to keep it solid. It is in stable condition and solid.
Would look ideal in the center of a formal garden, perhaps in a circle with a fish pond below or surrounded by boxwoods.
Measurements:
47" H x 22" W at top x 14" W at base
