This is a rare Edward F. Caldwell jewel casket made in New York in 1924. It is modeled after a 17th century Italian example. Coming directly from a wealthy NYC family where is passed down several generations. Marked on the underside. Rare piece.
Extremely high level of craftsmanship has gone into making this small box. Hand pierced bronze with lion details and velvet backing, interior cedar lined.
With the assistance of a Caldwell expert, we were able to locate sketches of this box in the firm's 1924 catalog.
Condition: Overall very good. Feet have some wear to the patinated surface. Most of the velvet backing has been rubbed down. General wear consistent with age.
